Top Law Schools

I am hoping someone can shed some light on this.

I have been accepted to UCLA, UT (with ~$70k), GULC
Rejected at UVA

I have been waitlisted at: BU, Emory, & ND. Although my numbers certainly aren't way above their medians, I am just curious as to why I would have been WLed at these but accepted at better schools. Is this any indication that I stand no shot at other higher ranked schools or should I not worry about the WLs? (I'm waiting on Cornell, Duke, Mich, Penn, and Vandy)

Is there anything else in your application that, combined with your GPA and LSAT, would lead BU, Emory, and ND to believe you'll be accepted and attend elsewhere?

+1. If you really want to go to one of the WLs, just send them a simple LOCI, and you'll get off it easily.

If you are above both their medians, and didn't write a convincing "Why X" essay, they have no reason to believe you have any real interest in their school.

Why do some people on here insist that schools don't care about 75%? Do they? Since the USNWR ranking only counts medians.

I noticed that UCLA and USA has those annoying why x essays, and that's why I didn't apply.

I think his point is that if you're more than a deviation or two above the class mean or median, then they're pretty sure you don't really intend to enroll at their school.

Although USNWR "only" takes into account median LSAT/GPA, they use yield as a factor, too. So the school has a vested interest in minimizing the number of offers of admission that aren't likely to be accepted. One way they do this is by waitlisting or denying students with aberrationally high numbers.

UCLA doesn't require the why x, and I just used my Y250 for it. I don't think that it really matters for them. As the poster above said, someone who is several notches above the median probably was accepted to a better school, and yield does matter. The 75th percentile is a useful means of describing this idea in a concrete way.

USC Today was just not mine day sigh... I am just glad no ding mail came today!

So if you are below median you may not get in, if you are above you may not get in. So we should shoot for @ median?

Fixed. Also, you get in if you write a why x or find some other way to express interest. Applying early is another way to minimize the possibility of yield protection.

I didn't see a why x for USC and certainly didn't write one, but still I got in.

You'll get in Cornell.

Thanks guys. I had originally thought that may be the case. In their defense, I had no intention of ever enrolling at any of the schools- it was just free to apply so I did. Why would schools give fee waivers to students with higher numbers than they generally accept. I am assuming it is so people that actually do have an interest (and write a "Why X" essay) can apply for free?

And Cornell would be nice
