Top Law Schools

Ok, so I have a question about one of my friend's cycle thus far. He has a 3.48 GPA from a top 20 state school and scored a 164 and then a 177 on the LSAT. He applied to a number of schools, but so far has only been accepted to GW (105,000) and UGA (5,000). While these acceptances are nice, he has been wait-listed at Fordham, American, Georgetown, and Virginia. He was also flat out rejected by Boston College. He still has apps out at Emory, Michigan, Harvard, and BU. Initially, I assumed all the wait-lists were YPs, but then the Georgetown and UVA ones happened recently. Do you think those are also yield protects or what? It sucks because if they were all yield protects and Michigan does it too and then he is rejected from Harvard he gets really screwed by the system. He knows that he should have applied to more of the T6, for insurance and leverage at the least, but that is no longer an option. I would assume that a strong LOCI will get him off most of these lists, but then that would screw him in terms of scholarship money. Have y'all ever heard of a cycle like this? Also, he has no "off the field" issues like an extensive criminal background, terrible personality that would show through a personal statement, or anything of that nature. Lastly, he is a URM.

Well, the waitlists may be for schools that average scores, although that should still leave him as a competitive applicant at a lot of schools.

He is in the situation he is in (or she...damned be my bias), so send the LOCI's. If it truly is yield protection, he can ask for money after getting off the waitlist.

I have no idea why it would happen, could be a multiple scores, could be a poorly written PS, could be mediocre letters of rec. Either way, just have them write LOCI's, once off the waitlists, if they are genuinely interested in attending, make the "please give me money" call/visit/e-mail.

This doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe someone wrote a terrible LOR for him.

all i can imagine is...some are YP's and, w/ those numbers and URM status, he might want to look over his resume and PS and see if something about it is just 'toxic'...this is weird imo

Yes, there is some kind of red flag in his application. Maybe a horribly written Personal statement? Bad LOR? C&F issue?
