Getting acceptance via Waitlist

How rare or common is it to get accepted when you are placed on a waitlist?

You're usually likely to get wait listed or rejected, but being on hold means they are seriously considering you. So if the other applications they recieve are about avg. to yours, it's more likely you'll get in. If they are better, the more likely you will be out.
