Re: U Penn WAITLIST 2010
Figured I'd tag and bump this thread back up seeing as it's seat deposit time, and that Penn claims it will be looking at WL'ed candidates in mid-May. I've heard that in the past Penn has drawn decent numbers off its Waitlist, but that doesn't appear to have been the case last year, according to LSN at least.
Anyone else have any insight?

Re: U Penn WAITLIST 2010
Also, I have another LOR that I want to submit to Penn, and they say in their email:
This additional letter of recommendation must be submitted through LSAC if you have not yet submitted the maximum of four letters to us through LSAC.
How do you submit an additional LOR through LSAC if you've already applied?

Update from Penn....
"Next week, we will begin reviewing all candidates on the waitlist. We anticipate extending a small number of admission offers this summer. We are, however, unable to say with certainty the exact number or the date by which we will finalize the process; the number of offers we will make is fully contingent upon the number of deposited students who defer or make other plans for the fall."

No, I don't think so. The email looked about as generic as it gets. I would be surprised if it wasn't sent to the entire WL.

Re: U Penn WAITLIST 2010
Did anyone else's say this:
"Also, I have attempted to answer some of the commonly asked questions surrounding our waitlist:
[strike]Our waitlist is not ranked. We consider all candidates on the waitlist every time we are in a position to make additional admission offers.[/strike] Good job bro you are #1/8,000 welcome to Philly."

The same way you submitted the other ones. They will forward it to the school. BTW if you have the letter writer fax it, it will be processed faster.lawschoollll wrote:Also, I have another LOR that I want to submit to Penn, and they say in their email:

Re: U Penn WAITLIST 2010
Long time lurker, first time poster.
Thought I'd sprinkle this bit of statistical sunshine on everybody's Penn hopes. I did an analysis of the Penn statistics at Law School Numbers to determine my chances of getting off the Waitlist. Realize that LSN is not a perfect statistical representation of the entire applicant pool but nonetheless, it is a gauge.
Total applicants on LSN = 688
Accepted / Not Yet Matriculated = 67
Withdrawn = 253
Pending = 79
Rejected = 169
Waitlisted = 92
Extrapolating the LSN pool over the entire pool of approximately 6000 actual applicants, I estimated the following for what it's worth.
Waitlist size estimate of 20% or 1130 people
Admitted Student estimate of 9% or 879 people
Attending Student estimate of 4% or 222 people
Reject and Withdrawn estimate of 67% or 3771 people
Realize these are rough numbers but they do correlate with past year's statistics provided from Penn. In conclusion, I believe we are collectively waiting for waitlist calls from Dean Post for a total of 28 law school seats amidst a waitlist of 1130 students calculated one way, and a more conservative 795 students if I use a conservative calculation method that assumes more withdraws from the WL than the sample suggests. (e.g. if you're accepted at Yale, you withdrew from Penn and didn't update LSN)
I'm riding this one out to the end myself because I've always dreamed of a Penn education. I realize my statistics may be off but the more I agonized over the statistics I realized a simple truth in all of this...their WL isn't ranked anyway. If a 9' tall hispanic female polo instructor declines the offer of admission they are probably going to search the WL for a similar student with similar numbers/story. So the odds of acceptance off the Penn waitlist are probably incalculable in the end. (it won't keep me from obsessing over the stats though)

Re: U Penn WAITLIST 2010
I left a couple estimates off that might be somewhat encouraging to URMs waitlisted at Penn. Again, these are only estimates because the LSN data is imperfect. Use as a rough gauge only.
URMs as a percentile of the Penn Waitlist = 13%
Estimated number of URMs on Penn Waitlist= 149
Average Waitlisted URM GPA = 3.52
Average Waitlisted URM LSAT = 165
And the comparison to non-URMs on the Waitlist at Penn and their stats/odds:
Average Waitlist GPA (including URMs Averaged in) = 3.78
Average Waitlist LSAT (including URMs Averaged in) = 172
And lastly, here are the stats of the "firm accepts" this year meaning those that deposited and withdrew from other schools. These figures would include early applicants and any EA/ED stats if Penn allows such options. (probably explains why the enrolled students are lower stats than the WL average...early applicants)
Average Enrolled GPA = 3.69
Average Enrolled LSAT = 171
URMs as a percentile of the Penn Waitlist = 13%
Estimated number of URMs on Penn Waitlist= 149
Average Waitlisted URM GPA = 3.52
Average Waitlisted URM LSAT = 165

Re: U Penn WAITLIST 2010
just an fyi, if you are sending in supplemental materials via email, you might want to call the admission office to confirm receipt of said materials. I sent in a supplemental essay last week and called Monday and Wednesday, and the office had yet to get to my email and as such had yet to update my file. With the wait list being revisited starting this week, obviously it is best to have your file as complete as possible. I was advised to fax over my supplemental essay to expedite the process. So if any of you are in the some boat, I'd call to make sure they have your LOCI or supp essays.

Any idea when Penn will actually start extending offers?

They were supposed to start reviewing Wl applications this week. I sent them a LOCI with my new GPA and GRE scores (I am interested in a JD/MA). I also had a prof sent another LOR. This waiting is driving me nuts.lawschoollll wrote:Any idea when Penn will actually start extending offers?

Re: U Penn WAITLIST 2010
If the stats I posted above are relatively accurate estimates (I believe they are), then it is entirely possible that we will not hear a peep on TLS about waitlist movement. If 28 WL seats approximately become available and if there are 800-1100+ people on the WL then the odds that someone is A.) On the WL, and B.) Gets accepted off the WL, and C.) Is a TLS member, and D.) Decides to brag about their accomplishment on TLS, is relatively small.
This is the time when we all need a miracle so pray, meditate, think positive thoughts or just hold out hope for yourself. It could be any one of us that get the call and only time will tell. (last year I think was the year that no WL calls were made, a couple years prior it was used fairly heavily)
"It ain't over 'till it's over". (and "over" officially happens at the end of August")

Re: U Penn WAITLIST 2010
The estimates are accurate in that you used the right numbers to determine what you could, but those numbers do not constitute a legitimately representative sample size. I think the pull from the waitlist could be 80 or 5 as easily as it could be 28. No offense at all meant to you, but I just can't believe that, using solely LSN, there is a way to forecast, in any meaningful way, WL movement at any school.
