I would just go to Columbia with that moneyHildegard15 wrote:Is it pretty much accepted that you can't negotiate scholarship packages from HYS? Or if you got hella money from Columbia could you use that to try and wiggle more need-based aid from one of the Big 3?

I think it is pretty much accepted that HYS will only negotiate scholarships based on other HYS offers. However, aren't you intending to do PI? If so, HYS + living costs would essentially be free, making this a moot point, no? (Certainly cheaper than Columbia, given living costs in NY.)Hildegard15 wrote:Is it pretty much accepted that you can't negotiate scholarship packages from HYS? They have by far the most generous LRAP programs, so all your law school debt (including living cost debt) is paid off within 10 years by HYS themselves if you have a low income job (I can't remember Stanford's terms, but for Harvard it's any JD required/advantage job below a certain level of pay, and for Yale it's any job at all below a certain level of pay).Hildegard15 wrote:I'm probably gonna do big law for a couple of years then transition into PI. How does HYS become free if you do PI? I'm expecting zero aid from HLS if I'm accepted since they calculate based on your parents finances.scone wrote:I think it is pretty much accepted that HYS will only negotiate scholarships based on other HYS offers. I get the impression that pretty much the only reason to do big law for a couple of years post-HYS if you want to go into PI is if you think you'll really love big law, or it's necessary experience for the type of PI you want to go into, as it doesn't seem like a particularly financially-wise decision (because of all the extra debt you have to pay off).
Edit: Columbia will cost >$60,000 + interest even with full scholarship, so while it will be cheaper to go there in the long run if you stay in big law or similar, it would be more expensive if you do PI or other less well remunerated work.
