I know a few people who choose it. My question is why does anyone want to do it?

Are you planning on opening your own practice when you get out of school? I haven't met a single attorney who has told me that it will give you any real advantage as far as working for a firm.

I've met M&A attorneys for Bryan Cave, I met a securities attorney at a biglaw firm whose Bachelors was in philosophy. Every person I've met has basically said there's really no value added in an MBA.

Does anyone on this board have a good rationale for getting one? Does it make it easier to break into biglaw?

I have heard a variety of positions on the JD/MBA combo. I think that there are distinct advantages, but only in niche markets. Several big law firms offer an additional $20,000 signing bonus for 1st year associates with an MBA... and in theory, it would give you a strategic advantage over other attorneys vying for a general counsel position. The real value? Networking.

Is networking worth an extra year of school and lost wages? I just don't see the value. Especially because you'll be networking with attorneys in law school and attorneys and clients (eventually) in practice.

My part-time application date is still 1/18. Do you mind me asking for your numbers?

For all of the admitted candidates so far, the status changed to the current date, and then again to "admitted" a day or so later. I believe those that were held for further review or rejected had their statuses changed directly to that. Take it for what's it worth...

I was Held earlier even though I didn't apply EA.

Hmm...164 was the "magic" LSAT number last time around, I've got similar numbers but applied EA. I can't remember the exact stats from the LSAC website, but last year something like 160 people applied with a 165-169 LSAT and 150 of those were admitted. Good luck!

If you have Biglaw grades, then you just paid for an extra year of school to get a $20K bonus when you could have been out of law school making $160K a year.

This is a question for the SMU students on here.

How much freedom do you have to choose electives and how much variety is there in your 2L and 3L years? I went to Texas earlier and there seemed to be a ton of elective options to take with clinics and stuff. Does SMU have a comparable variety?

Unfortunately, it looks like I am going to have to withdrawal. That puts $76K of scholarship money and an acceptance back on the market.

I'm PT and my status has not yet changed. From what status did it change? What is your new status?

I believe it was "application complete" on 1/26, and now its "application completed" on 3/4. I could swear they added a "D!" But I might be crazy.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
