Why was the LLB changed to a JD?

Post by laanngo » Tue Aug 18, 2020 9:05 pm

It's cool getting that leg up in work aside from the law, but why was the general-education of a lawyer a doctorate and not a baccalaureate? An actual PhD has to contribute to their field intellectually.

The real reason is government salary scales that are often based on a tiered salary scale with years of service + bachelors, masters or doctoral degree. A friend of mine's father graduated from HLS when it was an LLM and years later was able to send his info to get an updated diploma listing the JD. Columbia did this in their school of Social Work a few years ago which used to offer a DSW and retroactively changed to a Ph.D. as professional degree perception changed over time.

Degree inflation has impacted a lot of jobs. Everyone is a doctor now. PharmD comes to mind as an example.
