Fellowships 2019-2020 (Skadden/EJW, etc.)

Hi everyone,
I don't think this thread exists yet, so..... here we go. Who's on that fellowship grind?
Submitted Skadden on Monday, but I already know it's an uphill battle based on my School Rank/GPA. I'm hoping a miracle will happen or maybe that Kathleen is moving away from the emphasis on those things.
I still need to finish my EJW app but I'm exhausted. Whatever happens, I'll be happy when these are both in.

Has anyone gotten a call from Skadden about interviews? Website says they would be notifying people today.

In years past, they've started calling later in the evening (6:00 or 6:30 EST) so if they are calling today, they'll probably start soon.

Well I guess I'll just panic every time my phone vibrates for the rest of the evening.
The website makes it seem like just one person is making the calls - and that 100 people are getting interviews. So that process has to take several hours, right? Any idea how late calls have gone out in the past?

Anon mind if I ask what time your call came in? Just trying to gauge if I should give up or if they're likely still calling.
Also heard a rumor that they call alphabetically by last name but WHO KNOWS.

We likely won’t until late November- early December.

Anyone who had an interview remember when the finalist results come out? It's either today or tomorrow, but I can't recall. I guess I was too nervous to pay attention to what Kathleen said :\

I received a call this afternoon. A couple years ago, one of the finalists received a call after 8 pm.

1L here. Excuse my ignorance but what kind of GPA and ranking are needed for these type of fellowships? TY

It depends.
For EJW, it literally doesn’t matter at all—they don’t even take transcripts or GPA. A genuine dedication and passion for public interest is the #1 concern.
Skadden is basically the exact opposite. SBP personally called me to tell me to “quit wasting my time” because they throw out all applications with GPAs below 3.8. I don’t actually think that’s true, but it’s probably close. Prestige and grades are the most important for them, from all the Skadden fellows I talked to.

Anyone else waiting on EJW/other funders and also applying for government honors programs? It sounds like DOJ will make offers before Thanksgiving, other federal agencies are close behind, and state AGs are also on the move (California interviews in "early December"). I anticipate a problem with timing given that EJW has been radio silence -- it would be nice to know all of the options before potentially needing to make a decision. Thoughts?

This was me as a 3L. Was Skadden and DOJ Honors Finalist; hadn't heard anything from EJW after submitting my application. Ended up not getting either Skadden or DOJ and didn't hear from EJW until the spring. So there is definitely a chance that you will not hear anything from EJW before you need to make a decision re: Skadden/DOJ.

Bummer. Thanks for the info, though!

I’ve heard that interviews will start after Thanksgiving, so I’m guessing people will start to hear in the next week or so.

Just got an email that I’m still in the competition (yay!) but that interviews start next week. I haven’t heard anything about interviews, so I’m assuming I wasn’t selected. Anyone else hear anything?

You definitely shouldn't make that assumption. The interviews are rolling -- and they mean that generously. I know people who didn't get interviews until March last year. Each sponsor moves at their own pace, and some of them are faster than others.

I think maybe the above poster meant they hadn’t heard about the interviews just for next week.

Had anyone heard about those yet?
