No internal guidance for re-opening. Seems very much up in the air.

What did the email say about joining in October? Welcome aboard! They can't go back on their word again, right?

That is false. We are starting remotely until the office opens and it’s safe.

1. Does anyone have any idea how many trademark examiners is the USPTO looking to hire this cycle?
2. Does it make sense to apply for the entry level and experienced positions at the same time (for someone with less than 5 years of trademark experience?)
3. Are these positions open to the public or just to former/existing government employees? The posting are quite confusing.
Thanks

This will be my third time applying. Hoping third time is the charm! Anybody in the same position of applying for third or fourth rounds? Between my first time applying and now I've heard the job changed and I've read the TLS posts. Two attorneys said that it is a fabulous place to train for two years and then apply somewhere new. I'm realistic and I know it's not a good place to spend your entire career but would employees recommend for the training program? I like my job but wanted to work at USPTO since 3L. I have mixed feelings about the recent posts + I don't want to keep applying if it is not what it once was.

1. Not sure how many are being hired, but I think previous classes are generally around 25ish give or take.

2. The postings aren't super clear but they are all the same position. The GS12-14 posting is for trademark examiners who previously worked for the USPTO but left to pursue other opportunities. The law clerk GS9 position is for those who have not yet been admitted to a bar (but requires admission within a year of being hired). The GS11 attorney advisor position is the entry level position for those with an active bar membership. Hope that clarifies!

3. Sort of stated in 2, but the GS9 law clerk position and the GS11 attorney advisor position are open to the public, the GS12-14 postings are for previous examiners.

I can't really speak to training, as I was trained prior to COVID and thus I think the situation is a little different for those who were trained more recently. But yes, in general, I feel like the training is effective. And by that, not just the initial ~6 week training but the additional mentorship and such thereafter. As for the recent posts, yes, things have changed and the evaluation criteria is more stringent. Is it impossible? No. But more is definitely expected which obviously increases stress. If you've really wanted to work here since being a 3L, I say go for it.

Received an email this morning that I was referred to selection official! Super excited. For those who have gone through this process already, the next step is the writing sample? Do all applicants have to do this. Will there be a separate email? Thanks!

I got an "referred" email this morning as well. I believe the next step is a request for a writing sample but that is not required for all candidates. They can choose to just schedule you for an interview. Hopefully they schedule the interviews sooner.
Does anyone know if the interviews would be in person or phone?
Good luck
