so how many hours on average does a big law partner work, namely rainmakers...especially at places like Wachtell who have lockstep...does it ease up once you become partner at places like that?

No. By many accounts the hours get worse, especially for junior partners. The 40-50 hour week is not something to look forward to unless you become a senior partner w a big book of portable business and service partners you can trust. Good luck getting there if you want it.

At Wachtell? Gotta bill 3000+ hrs per year

It’s been a while since I’ve seen general numbers, but most firms partners work about 10%-15% more billable hours than non-partners

That's not the case at my lockstep v10 -- in my practice group, at least. Partners generally billed less (though did a lot more billable travel), but did much more biz dev after hours + had to deal with the stressful "bet the house" from clients.
