I'm curious to know what it really means to be in the XXth percentile.

no it does not 80th percentile may mean 200 or 20000 as per numbers supplied. Why are some people in such a rush to be a**holes.

to the op I believe there are roughly 140k tests administered (retakes included) and about 80,000 lsdas registrations. google lsats administered for the exact data.

Not trying to be an ass, but a 170 means you are in the top 2% regardless of how many people took it, just not too far to the extreme of 1.

Meaning someone with a 165 would be in the ranks of 165 wheather 100 people took it or 100,000,000, because its a percentage.

So no, it doesnt matter.

You cant say, "Oh I feel better about my 165 because only 15k took this test, If I took a test with 150k I would score a 170, doesnt work that way.

i think op wanted to know "if i score in the 99th percentile i did better than 99 percent of test takers, which means i did better than x many people"

No it's not. Being in the 99th percentile of a total of 100,000 test takers is more telling than of a total of 1000 test takers. The former definitely has more prestige and makes for a more compelling candidate.

yes but it is obvious from everything else he says that he wants to know whether his 97th percentile(making it up) gives him the same score as 100 or 5000 or 20000 people.

you are making too much of this; i do not think the op is concerned with prestige as much as with how many others he is competing for the few law school spots.

you would have to be sick in the head to use the lsat as a measure of prestige. its just a learnable standardized test IMO.

142k last year, but June tests were up 15%...yikes. BTW, this is the number of tests administered, which doesn't account for retakers.

ouch, the highest EVER, finance degrees will be a dime a dozen , well at least february was a bit lower than the previous year

Thanks to the people that replied after the second dude.

As one of you pointed out, I'm trying to see how many people I'm competing against.

My logic is that there are hard numbers as to how many people apply to certain schools--like 8,000 applications, or whatever. So I wanted to know how many people scored what I scored to see where I fit among those 8,000.

No I'm not; I'm only making a logical conclusion. why else would someone want to know how many people he is competing against? The give away is "competition". if there are many candidates vying for a few spots, then it is only natural that each of them will be seeking superiority over the next person. Don't bust my balls for reaching a valid and logical conclusion. what else does someone do with an information like that?
