Is taking the LSAT cold common?

A few kids in my class were talking about the September LSAT and they had all mentioned taking the LSAT cold; no preparation at all. I was wondering how common this is? What is roughly the average length and intensity of preparation devoted to the LSAT?

People who take a real LSAT cold are stupid.

As far as time to prepare, it depends. A close friend of mine scored a 170 with less than a week's prep. It took me a full year of studying to hit 175+.

It takes as much time as it takes. Its 100% individual.

It depends on the person and how long it will take them to study, as well as what their goal score is. Some may take a month of studying to get a 170, while there may be others who take a year or two to get a 170 on the real test.

I mean, the mean score is 150. So probably pretty common.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. There's tons of people who just sit fo the LSAT cold, ar at least would at my undergrad. Then there's maybe ~20% or so who study for like 3-6 weeks and probably don't do all that well.

It is probably common given the grade distribution. It is a highly learnable test so I tend to think the lower scores are more so a sign of under preparation and just "winging it" than any lack of ability.

Anyway, I wouldn't do it. Maybe take your first practice LSAT cold but take the real thing hot after legitimate preparation. I'm more of a pragmatist so I don't see the point in wasting an entire day taking a stressful test that you are completely underprepared for and whose score goes into a long-term record.

Oh, by no means am I intending to take the LSAT cold. It was just an interesting trend I saw in my class (and at my undergrad in general.)

I did this the first time (was leaning against going to law school and was having a really shitty couple of months). Had 0 idea how to do logic games.

I'd say 50-75% of the people in my LSAT room were taking it cold.
