AC (C) analogizes two different things/traits that if used would give the person or insect a living/survival advantage but that the people and insects paradoxically don't use the thing to gain the advantage. The two things analogized in (D) are not things that would confer life/survival advantages to people if used. Although drinking and smoking can be fun! lol they don't necessarily give a person life/living/survival benefits/advantages, and can in fact harm rather than help people that smoke/drink.
