I think you should do what you feel is right for you personally. Yah its true, you may or may not be making the wrong decision, but at least it was your decision and you can live with that. Even if you don't make Harvard, I'm sure you can make a good school. And you would rather make your living through ability rather than name no?

To answer your question: No I don't think they look down on it. I don't think they look favorably upon it either, but if you increase your score, I would venture to guess that it is almost always better to do so.
That said, how bad do you want HYS? If you want it bad enough, retake in September and get that 178 you know you're capable of scoring. You're right when you state that is was probably just nerves. It is a decent bit higher than what you have on the books, so I would say retaking is worth the trouble, but again, that is ultimately your decision and not your parents.
With a 4.0+ and a 178, I don't see why you wouldn't get H, S, and have a great chance at Y.
On the flip side, if you don't retake, and figure you will take your chances, you will still have a great cycle. I suppose it all comes down to how badly you want a chance at HYS. Otherwise, you should comfortably get plenty of T14 and T6 acceptances.
