Splitting Game Boards in Sequencing Games

Hey guys,
I've been lurking on this site for a minute, but now have a perplexing issue which I'm hoping can be addressed on this forum.
For logic games, what do you look for to determine whether to split up your game board after reading the rules? I've watched a good amount of the 7sage videos, and JY splits sometimes, and others he chooses not to. I am thinking it's based on a combination of how restrictive the rules are/how many spaces there are in the given sequence. For instance, he seems to split when there is a 2 item boxed rule, i.e. f immediately follows r [FR] with 5-6 spaces in the sequence. This makes sense to me, given how few options there are for placing that block. But other times there is a less clear/restrictive rule and he still elects to split up the board.
I guess my question is, is this a matter of personal preference, or is their some implicit rule or guideline for when you should split the board?
Responses are much appreciated. One love.
