Take a class? Hire a tutor? Postpone?

Hi everyone,

I took two tests this week for the first time.
#1:
-7, -3 LR
-6, -2 RC
-0, -0 LG
-5, -2 LR
163, 171

#2:
-0, -0 LG
-7, -3 LR
-3, -1 LR
-9, -6 RC
166, 173

First number is original score, second number is blind review. My blind review is basically me going back and the questions I wasn't 100% about, most of them it's just narrowed down to 2 answers, the first one is wrong and the second one in BR is right.

Do you think 175 is possible for October? Should I take a class, hire a tutor? Study myself? Or postpone? I have now until test day completely free and can spend as much time as possible preparing. I just don't know if I am able to do it on my own or are my weak spots something I need assistance in? Thanks in advance everyone.

Well... a 175 is theoretically POSSIBLE for anyone, but if I had to say whether it's likely (in any sense of the word) that you'd get a 175 in a month when your current best is 166.... definitely not. Even if you have absolutely nothing else to do, there just isn't time because you will encounter this awful situation where you A) need to spend immense numbers of hours improving, yet B) will get burned out and won't gain anything from OVERstudying. If you're utterly set on applying this year, either study yourself or hire a tutor. Nearly all LSAT classes are NOT for people hoping to get over 170 - they're for people who shouldn't be going to law school in the first place. You should be weary of a tutor also, because most tutors didn't even get a 175 - but perhaps you can find the perfect teacher. But once again, you'll probably improve but a 175 is very unlikely (Admittedly, I know a guy who had a practice test high of 168 and then scored 174 on the real thing, but that sort of luck - because luck is exactly what it is - is not common enough to rely on. Generally plan on getting lower than your highest PT.).

If you're willing to wait a year to apply you could definitely put in FAR more time and practice without the stress and then who knows, maybe you'll get a 180.

I had similar scores on my diagnostics, and after about 7-8 weeks improved to 176. I think if I had taken a test after the first month I would have scored like a 168/169. Stuff really started clicking for me in the second month.

I think a 175 could be possible. It depends why you missed these questions. Sometimes just applying a strategy while reading RC can make a significant difference. Also the discrepancies between your LR sections could say that if you remain consistent in your approach you could increase your score significantly. It also depends how much time you have to study for the test. If you work full time it could be really hard.

I don't know if you can take a class in time for October. I took a course and it helped me get to 174. However, the class ran for three months, I think the most useful part of it was talking through questions with someone who did well on the test. Perhaps registering for the October test, and then delaying if you are not at the score you want the week before might be a good choice.

I am now tutoring people trying to get into the 170s, feel free to PM me if you are interested in tutoring, or also happy to give advice.
