Logic Games: Choosing a Setup

How did you guys learn to create a proper setup for a game, was it a matter of just having done a ton of them? Right now my only problem is choosing the right setup, I'll get almost an entire game wrong or freeze just because I can't get the setup right 
I haven't done too many games yet (50+) so I'm thinking that might be it.
