Why wouldn't you hire one?
That said, you do not need a coach to succeed. What you do need (at least what I needed) is to understand the test material, so that you can anticipate what makes an answer choice right, and a good sense of pattern-recognition, so that you can arrive at right answers quickly. You can do that stuff on your own. You really can. It will just probably take longer if you do it on your own (and it may be more difficult for you that way).
A great coach can speed up the process of understanding and implementing strategies. And it doesn't have to cost you $2K. I wouldn't drop that kind of cash on a course when there are such good options (cough, Velocity, cough, cough) for complete, actionable prep advice for so much less.
