What scholly are you applying for? I can't imagine it will matter as long as you commit to retaking, though.

Ah. Don't know anyone on that program, but I imagine it's competitive. You might not get it even with the numbers, but you surely will get a big scholly. Don't be afraid to negotiate.
But yeah, don't cancel unless you think you got like, below 160.

I've come to accept that a retake in December is probably in my future (and, as a result, waiting a year to apply).
Why are you waiting a year? I imagine that with a 170-176 in December (dependent on your GPA being ok) u'd have a pretty decent shot at NYU. But someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I went to a panel with an admissions officer at NYU who subtly suggested that sending in an application in January works against applicants. If I cancel, I'll need to wait until I have my score in. Also, if I send it in with a bad score in November and an addendum to hold off on decisions until after my December LSAT is in, the pressure of having to do well on test day will be magnified even more. I know that's a little irrational, but I'll feel more confident waiting a year to apply.
It'll also give me time to bulk soft factors in a desperate attempt to mediate the impact of my LSAT.

Sounds exactly like what happened to me.
Did great in all sections except for the LG which I totally messed up. I cancelled while taking the test.
I'm going to retake in December and apply early next year for sure. Not going to send out applications without knowing my LSAT score.

Hmm. Well I'm shooting for a 170+ and will be applying to NYU in January.
It's not as good as sending it in earlier of course, but if you get a 174 or 175 like on your PT's, I'd think you'd have a solid shot. If anyone thinks I'm wrong feel free to tell me! Check LSN for some small-sample-size data.

If it makes you feel any better, I pretty much did the same thing. I knew my timing was off on LG and flat-out panicked. I had to guess for an entire game and don't feel great about the other games. It's crazy to think that, if given 10 more minutes, I think I would have felt wildly different about my score. It was really a mindfuck considering that LG was my last section, and I was feeling awesome about the 3 sections of LR and the RC. I had to write my essay through tears. Decided not to cancel but am going to register for December.

How did you make the decision not to cancel after the crying essay thing? (I had the exact same situation) I'm feeling like it's not worth it to have a score from a test that literally reduced me to tears on my testing record. I told my pre-law adviser about it and he said not to freak out about it, but then he followed it up with "there are plenty of schools that'll take your projected score" and we are no longer speaking.

So I thought IILJ (and all NYU scholarship programs) required completed applications by Jan 1 and since LSAT scores are released slightly after that you wouldn't have a completed app on Jan 1. That is what their website says. Is this not the case? I hope not because I couldn't take the Sept LSAT so Dec will be my first and I thought I would be out of luck for IILJ.

You can still apply, but you need to defer for a year and apply for the scholarship.

I would not cancel it. I have had a similar experience twice. Once when taking the GRE and once with the LSAT. With the GRE I only had a few days to prepare and had never actually practiced on a computer and didn't realize you couldn't go click back to previous questions. I ended up having to blindly guess on the last SEVEN of the thirty total questions in the math section. On the LSAT last year I messed up on the last section, which was logical reasoning. I was bored at that point--really the most awful excuse ever. Anyway, I ran out of time and had to guess on the last three questions (which literally never happened to me on logical reasoning).
Had you asked me after either of those tests, I would have told you I had bombed them both. But on the GRE I matched my target verbal score and somehow miraculously managed to post a near perfect math score and on the LSAT I still managed a 170+ despite thinking I had bombed all the way down into potentially the low 160s.
My point of that long and drawn out explanation is that I think I made a few mistakes and thought that overshadowed my perception of how well I did on the rest of the test, but in reality I had done well enough on the rest of my exams that I was able to absorb some mistakes and it turned out the mistakes were not as big as I thought they were. So unless you are pretty sure that you are not overreacting, I would keep the score. You just never know.

i know people who have gotten named scholarships with a december take and a post-jan 1 application
make sure you have everything else in your app ready to go so you can fire it off as soon as you get your score back

This is helpful to know... just in case.
