If you feel that you can do better, I don't see any reason for you to not retake it. I don't know what your current plans are but, even if you decide to apply this cycle, a retake in February can, in my opinion, only potentially help you.

Also, I'm pretty sure that anytime anyone posts their first LSAT score on here and asks whether they should retake, the answer they get will almost always be yes (unless, of course, their first score was a 180).

You don't need to retake to get HYS and CCN with a 4.2/173. A higher LSAT score might make a difference in terms of scholarship money at CCN, but it shouldn't matter in terms of your admissions chances. Some people here would disagree with me on this, but I think if Y and S don't take you with your current stats, 3 or 4 more points on the LSAT isn't going to sway the committees in your favor.

I also had a high PT range and was relatively disappointed with 173 in October. I decided to retake and ended up being more disappointed with December. Retake if you want, but beware that given where you're trying to score, there isn't a big margin for error. You could have an off day and not know it (since it can be hard to know how the test is going in real time) and end up with a lower score. That probably wouldn't affect your admissions chances either, but I wouldn't want to put in all that time and effort and not end up with a higher score.

That said, I see the appeal of a retake. If you're super confident you can do better and you don't mind studying for another 6 weeks, it probably can't hurt to roll the dice.

you're fine with 173 for HYS.

At or above both medians, only your softs would hold you back from those schools.

During undergrad I've had several heart issues that have necessitated open heart surgery and several other cardiac interventions. Should I bring this up some way in my application as a partial explanation for my relative lack of extracurricular involvement? Just to be clear I am not planning applying this cycle.
I definitely would incorporate that into the overall narrative of your application, for sure.

That's a valid excuse if I've ever heard one.
