Diminishing returns? Once you reach a certain point, you may not plateau, but you won't be seeing a point improvement on every pt. I think when you hit that point the hours don't feel fruitful, and if you have a full time job or something the life utility might not be there in 200 hours to go from 164 to 166.

Edit: with a cold diag of 160+ I think three months to 173 is perfectly legit

In three months, you can take all preps and even start retaking them.
For me, the retaking period seemed to be less effective and a little hard to do anything to improve your scores above 170+ after the second take.
Of course this depends on how you review and how much you study but in my opinion,
I don't think studying for a year has much difference with studying for 6 months or so.

3 months did the trick for me. I think that's fairly standard, although everyone's different.

It took me eight months to get my 174. However, this was after about five months of tooling around, thinking I was actually making progress. I hit my max PT in April at 170 before dropping down to a 164.
I spent the summer completely changing my study process and started getting 175s in my PTs by early September.
Get your studying right the first time and you can get it done in 3-4 months... but do it PROPERLY.

Quality over Quantity.

Three months of quality preparation is superior to a year of mediocre studying.

three months is more of a minimum, unless you're getting consistent 178/9/80's before that.

Everyone is different. I'm taking February and I've been studying for exactly 3 weeks as of today. I can assure you it does not take everyone a year to hit 173+.

I agree wholeheartedly wrt the comments about quality vs. quantity; study smart AND hard, and 2 or 3 months can, for many people, lead to 175+ with consistency.

Clearly not. I studied for 2 and a half and got 173+. 3 months just seems to be a rough estimate that works for many people. Now if you work full time or have lots of other time commitments (aka you are not a student anymore) you may need more than that.

The quality over quantity comment above sums it up perfectly.

This, I had a full time internship/beginning of school for my studying so it wasn't near the work load or stress of a full time job. And I also did make the LSAT my life. I stopped going out with friends and pretty much doing anything but work and LSAT for the summer and then minimal school work to get by and LSAT.

Studied for a lot longer, but I worked full-time while studying. It took me a while to get the material down, and then move to preptests. I did the tests, and then redid them.

In all seriousness doeee. Everyone should probably talk in terms of numbers of hours spent. If you say you studied for a year, that doesn't give a lot of ground because you may have studied 30 min a day for a year or you may have studied 12 hours a day. Let's please talk in terms of hours , eh?

This whole thread just makes me want to cancel my June date and take the Oct instead...ugh

I don't know that hours are an inherently better measure, though. I'd get more benefit from studying two hours a day for a year than I would studying twelve hours a day for two months. I'm talking daily averages, obviously, since two hours isn't enough to do a timed PT.
