With the downturn in law school admissions and LSAT takers, how is the market right now for LSAT instructors?

Are you guys getting enough work/hours/students?

EDIT: Title was meant to say 178+ hypothetically. I'm flattered that people would like me to tutor them, but I have yet to take the LSAT. lol.

I think that the amount of test takers are dropping, but there is still room for private tutors.
Tutor me on skype for free and I will tell you if you are good enough or not.

way worse than it was a few years ago.

Too many 175+ scorers deciding not to go to law school. Still, depending on your area, worth a try.

A craigslist ad is the easiest way to get started. As for a job, there are lots of high scorers out there, but companies want high scorers who can teach.

So if you're good at both, then it shouldn't be too hard. Private tutoring will make you better at teaching.

The number of LSAT students is dropping, but people seem to be prepping more. I haven't noticed a decline in students, personally.

How much could someone realistically make in a year if they personally tutored based off a Craigslist ad? Maybe $20,000 a year? Or more? Have any of ya'll ever done it? I guess a lot depends if one is in a major city.

That depends on a few factors:

* The rate you charge
* The market rate
* The amount of other tutors + tutoring ads
* The number of LSAT students

I have the only ad in my city, but a smaller market. I could probably get more students if I were more active at putting posters up on college campuses. The only way to know for sure in your market is to try.

In most US cities, rate of $50-$100 per hour are the norm.

Pro-tip: Assuming you sound credible, try to talk to prospects on the phone. For some reason this convinces students to go with me.

Edit: Just wanted to add that this is a great part-time gig, if that's all you can make it. I'm doing it (and other LSAT work) full time, but if I were doing something else I wouldn't say no to 5-10 hours of tutoring per week at a high rate.

If I were to score high enough, I would consider doing it because it seems like easy money. But I am also one of those people who may never want to see an LSAT book ever again. Decisions. Decisions.

This is an important consideration for anyone who is thinking about teaching the LSAT - the work is EXTREMELY seasonal. The December and February LSATs definitely have fewer people taking them, and there are lulls in the year when almost no one is prepping. You need to take that into account and squirrel away some cash from the June/October LSATs.

+1 on the seasonality of the work

A minor correction to something bp shinners implied in his comment, though - October and December are the most popular LSAT administrations, not June and October.

We're hungry for more teachers in various places. You have to have 2+ years teaching experience to qualify to audition. I believe we've got the highest pay of any LSAT prep company ($100/hr for all teaching, plus we pay for prep time), so it can't hurt to take a peek...

Haven't taken it yet, but want to score very high and possibly tutor the LSAT while considering law school.

I've been reading the emnployment threads here at TLS and the job market for lawyers looks terrible. Not sure I'd want to attend law school even in the next few years, but maybe 4-5 years down the line if the market improves I'd be interested.

That's still 99nth percentile, right? That's good enough for all the companies I'm familiar with, and good enough for a craigslist ad.
