How exactly do admissions view three LSAT scores?

Assume that there's an upward trend and the last LSAT score is 170+. Is the only disadvantage to having three scores on your record that you'll be less of a competitive applicant if someone has the same score as you but only took the LSAT once? Do you think this situation is one that happens often? Are there any positives in taking the LSAT three times other than showing the admissions office that you're persistent by having taken the LSAT three times? I've done a search of this topic but haven't found anything concrete enough. Thanks!
