How many LSATs is too many LSATs?

I've taken the LSAT once. Scored a 166, well over a year ago. Haven't looked at it much since. Considering studying as much as I can with a ft job and taking it in October, then if I am happy with my score apply for the 2013 cycle and if I'm not wait a year and retake. But is taking the LSAT 3 times not a good thing? Should I just try to take it, at most, twice?

It mostly depends on which schools you plan on applying to. The general consensus is that multiple LSAT scores
do not matter, as most schools take your highest score.

To put it another way: A higher score is going to help you more than any second thoughts by adcomms concerning multiple test would hurt you.

OP, exhaust all of your retakes; take it 3 times.

To be slightly at odds with the other posters, don't take it in October if you're not happy with your PT scores. While at most places it doesn't matter that much, there's no reason to sit for the exam if your not going to get the score you want. And a few point bump on test day isn't the norm.

taking it a third time will most likely hurt you if your third score ends up being lower than your second score, as it suggests that your highest score was an anomaly. If you can improve your score, however, it's pretty much always better to retake, as schools only need to report your highest score for the sake of their own stats.

I don't see how taking the test three times can hurt you, considering that law schools only take the highest score. Retake until you are satisfied with the schools you get into or until you can't anymore.
