wHy is the answer E and not B? Can anyone shed some light on this one thanks

Simply put, B) is saying something too strong while we can be sure that E) conforms to the information provided in the stimulus.

This is an inference question. The correct choice is generally going to be a combination of different pieces of info in the content, or an assumption or implication of a piece of information/combination of pieces of information. This is also why you should always be on the lookout for new info since new info by definition is not a consequence of already existing information.

The way to determine whether or not a choice is correct is to see if you can come up with a scenario where it's not true and there's no conflict with the info in the content. If you can then you know it doesn't have to be true, if you can't then there's your answer.

For B although it's very tempting and is actually an inference in the everyday meaning of the word it's not correct because it doesn't actually have to be true. And it brings up new information - people getting sick. The content doesn't talk about people getting sick, it talks about how easy it is for airborne illnesses to spread and levels of CO2. All we can reasonably infer is that flights after 1985 have higher levels of CO2 and it's easier for illnesses to spread. But an illness spreading and an illness being contracted are two different things - maybe people today have better immune systems, maybe flights are shorter, maybe there are other factors that prevent people from contracting an airborne illness even though they were in an environment with more airborne illnesses. Point is we've come up with a couple of scenarios that question the choice but don't conflict with the content.

For E there's no way that we can question the choice. It has to be true logically since it's a combination of the information in the passage. If flights before 85 replenished air every 30 minutes then a flight in 80 replenished air every 30 minutes. And if flights today replenish air every hour then the flight in 85 replenished its air more often than the flight today. So the flight in 80 had less CO2 because of the last sentence: the less frequently air is replenished, the higher the level of CO2.

Remember, for these questions look for new info and think to yourself, 'does it have to be true?'
