We are told that in terms of water molecules, that oxygen-18 are rarer than normal oxygen.

Answer choice A of #20 states that the rain cloud, once formed over the Atlantic, contains more normal oxygen than oxygen-18.

I agree that this is true in terms of water molecules. But am I told that these are the only molecules of a cloud?

I am not sure what all molecules make up a cloud, as the stimulus does not tell me. It does seem a bit unsupported to go from a variable being more common in respect to one type of molecule, and then concluding that in the entire cloud this variable is more common.

It matters as this could include oxygen-18 in other types of molecules. Perhaps oxygen-18 is more prevalent than normal oxygen in other types of molecules.

Thanks for the comments. My point is that even with the question stem being a most supported instead of a must be true, I still feel that this is not very well supported at all.

It isn't out of the question to assume that clouds are nothing but water molecules. But it isn't out of the question to think that they are more than that either.

Why do you always have to try to manufacture an irrelevant technicality about why the test writers SHOULD'VE written a question a certain way instead of the way it's actually written? It doesn't matter; you have to work with what you're given.

I would not call this an irrelevant technicality. You must assume that the only way oxygen and oxygen-18 can be found in a cloud is through water molecules.

Yes, it is common knowledge that clouds are made up of water vapor. It, however, is not common knowledge, I assume, that water vapor is the only thing that makes up a cloud.

Common knowledge earth's clouds are water. One must make the assumption we are not talking about clouds over the Atlantic on Venus or or Neptune

You roll your eyes, but what if a bird is flying through a cloud? You would agree with me that, if that were the case, then the clouds on Earth could be composed of both water and bird. What if a plane flies through a cloud and a bird is sucked into the engine? Surely, then, the cloud is water, bird, and plane?

And what about the case of Danaë, the mother of Perseus? Zeus visited her in the form of a golden shower/cloud. Obviously, with this information, you wouldn't argue that a cloud could not be composed of, in addition to water, god, gold, and sex act.

Whenever you've deliberating between two choices, that is, select the one that you believe fits the criteria called for by the stem and makes the least amount of assumptions.

I'm not sure which answer choice you thought was more correct, if you will, but reevaluate it with Occam's Razor in mind.

I got the question right. I had to presume that the only thing that comprises a cloud are water molecules. But like I said, it isn't a wild assumption to make either way. I have asked a couple of people what is a cloud in just side chat. Almost every single one answer water. I then asked if that was the only thing, I did not have one person have 100% confidence that it was so.

I did not expect childish behavior to spill out in this thread and I consider this thread at rest.
