How much is a score above 165 hurt by two mediocre grades (in the 150s) preceding it?

Unless you scored a 157-159 and these were at the lowest end of your PT scores when preparing, I would say quite a bit. But if you were averaging in the mid/low 160's and ended up with a 159 or something, it would probably be a good idea to take another shot at it.

I really don't know that much about multiple scores, but I'm guessing the damage would be either
a) adcomms average your two highest and consider your app with that value, e.g., if your #s are 155/165, they view it as a 160.
b) they consider your app with primarily the highest score in mind or within a few points short of that, e.g., highest is 165, they view it as a 162-165

This all probably depends on the specific school and maybe partly on the #s of others in your cycle. Either way, I think a huge jump probably warrants some kind of addendum explaining the increase.
