When there is no rank, what does lower/higher number mean??

Post by kovacs » Sat Jun 25, 2011 5:05 pm

Say for example, there are 7 swimming lanes. What is the lowest-numbered lane? 1 or 7?

The lower number means, literally, the lowest number. So in your example, 1 would be the lowest numbered lane.

So, highest rank is obviously #1, whereas lowest number out of seven is #1.
Relative in former, and absolute in latter.

Yeah, be careful with that wording, it's easy to get tripped up and get the two confused. Usually you'll see "lowest numbered"

2?

288?

Seriously, ranks work in the reverse order of numbers. It means exactly what it means.

Like the guy said above, be careful. Swimming lanes or, for example, the lanes on a track don't have anything to do with "rank". If the question talks about 7 swimming lanes consecutively numbered 1 through 7, 7 will be the highest number and 1 the lowest.

If the question says 7 people compete in a race. R finishes first, whereas T finishes third etc., that's a different kind of question. Now you're dealing with the order in which the sprinters finish the race. 1 (1st place) is the highest rank and 7 is the lowest (last place).

Pretty obvious, but I can see how you could get confused.

Why the rush to commodify? I prefer treating the lsat as if it were wizardry.
