I suspect so they know what type of desk to give you.

Nailed it. They have to know which side you'll need room on to write.

They try to accommodate southpaws with the right desks. Obviously doesn't make a difference with big table/bench desks, but if you're in an auditorium classroom with the tiny desks that you pull up from the right or left side of your seat it makes a big difference.

Strangely, when I took the Exam at BU in June, they asked everyone at the door if they were right handed or left handed, even though the room only had big tables with plenty of room either way.

Regardless of the type of desks, they seat the lefties together away from the righties. They don't want people leaning towards each other. Also, I'd check with your test center before registration to make sure they have left-handed desks or normal tables. I felt really bad for the 4 or 5 people in my room (about 1/3 of the test takers) who had to use a right-handed desk. This particular university owns no left-handed desks.

I'm a leftie and I haaaaaaate the left-handed fold-up desks.

Luckily at my testing center, all the rooms had big tables, with only 2 people at each.

All of this. (Except the tables at my center were long lecture-hall tables.)

My center had the big tables but they still called lefties first. I am not a leftie but for some reason was called up during the lefty group. But I got to be seated in the better room so I didn't mind.
