This is for the summer after 1L...
1. A paid internship (7k a month) working with an in-house legal team.
or.
2. An unpaid judicial externship.

Tough call. Do you have these options or is this hypothetical?
$7k a month over summer is pretty hard to turn down, especially with how difficult the legal employment market is right now.
On the other hand, what type of judicial externship are you talking about? Meaning jurisdiction info about the option. If it's something with a high level court (like SCOTUS or a Federal judge), you take that.

Wrong forum, but this depends a lot on your career goals I think. If you want to clerk after you graduate I would go with the externship. Otherwise, take the in-house job and pay down some of your debt.

These are options that I have secured. I am leaning towards the in-house position, but I'm hesitant because I feel like the externship will help get me a biglaw job. And no, it's not SCOTUS or high level.

In-house. Conventional wisdom is that 1L judicial externships aren't anything amazing.

If you go with the paid summer gig, double check to make sure the firm is still healthy and didn't suddenly implode like Howrey recently did without warning.
