I was trying to solve this problem for more than an hour and still can't get the answer. It's not that there are contenders, but that the supposedly right answer doesn't seem to justify the conclusion.

So here it goes

Having an efficient, attractive subway system makes good economic sense. So, the city needs to purchase new subway cars, since the city should always do what makes good economic sense.

the conclusion drawn above follows logically if which one of the following is assumed?
The correct answer is E) New subway cars are required in order for the city to have a subway system that is efficient and attractive.
The problem is that when I draw the diagram, it's

1) Attractive and efficient -> Good Econ Sense
2) City -> Good econ sense

Conclusion

3) City-> New Subway cars
The only way this conclusion can be justified is by assuming that If Good Econ Sense -> then New Subway cars
None of the answer choices have this as the answer, and the supposedly correct answer E only messes up the diagram. Help Please?

Conclusion: New subway cars -> City should do it

Premise 1: Efficient cars + attractive cars -> Good economic sense
Premise 2: Good Economic sense -> City should do it
Assumption: New subway cars -> efficient cars + attractive cars

If the city should always do what makes good economic sense, then the city should have an efficient, attractive subway system. By inserting "(E) If a subway system is efficient and attractive, then new subway cars are required (paraphrased)," we can properly conclude that the city should get new subway cars.

Your diagramming is fine, but you got tripped up because you forgot to consider the part that says the city should do whatever it takes to make good economic sense. This lets you infer right away that the city should have an efficient, attractive subway system based on sentence 1. Now you just need to find a way to link that to getting new subway cars. (E) does that.
