What does "It summarizes a position against which the argument is directed" mean??
Does it mean, it summarizes a position that the opposing argument is against?

Some people say that vanilla is the best ice cream flavor. However, they are clearly wrong. Chocolate is far superior both in taste and in texture.
The first sentence does what you're describing, I believe. The rest of the argument is arguing against the position expressed in the first sentence.

It's a common English syntax... You might be more familiar with "it summarizes a position which the argument is directed against."
