What is the basic difference between Linear/Advanced Linear and Grouping games?

What's the difference between apples and oranges?

But fundamentally it's a question of what's happening in the scenario. Are people being ordered (first to last, fastest to slowest, shortest to tallest, etc) or being put into a group (selected or not selected, group 1 or group 2, etc.)

Some games have both. Don't let the definitions pigeonhole you into only using a rigid approach. You may need to improvise.
