LG: shorthanding subgroups

i've tried using uppercase letters to differentiate one subgroup from the other like
ABCDE for 5 children
wxyz for 4 adults
for a rule like A must be in the same group as w and z
i'll write [Awz]
but i still sometimes get confused and become slowed by not distinguishing various variables as being part of different subgroups quickly enough. i don't think i'm fluid as i should be.
do you guys write anything special to remember to discriminate between different subgroups or just use your working memory?
