Pros/Cons of Retaking LSAT in Feb 2011

Post by seaguy2010 » Wed Dec 22, 2010 11:11 pm

I took the Oct 2010 LSAT and scored a 165 (92nd percentile). I do feel that if I worked on particular weaknesses, I could boost this score to the 170+ range. I was a mathematics major as an undergrad and my cumulative LSAC GPA is 2.97 (all undergrad work combined). I'm currently in the process of submitting my applications.

I have some solid work experience (business-related for a couple years).

Schools that I'm looking at and applying to right now are USD, UC Davis, UC Hastings, Loyola (all are target scores).

Question: Would there by any benefit of studying for the Feb LSAT and aiming for a 170+ score?

What would the pros/cons be? I'm already going to submit my apps with my current score but figured a higher score could come in handy for scholarship money. But the question is: how much would it actually help? I'm trying to figure out whether I should dedicate the time necessary until the Feb exam.

Advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Tough spot, a re-write in your situation would be helpful for the higher ranked schools but by Feb there won't be many spots left especially for splitters. Tough call.

I would really like to get into USD or Loyola (LA). I was going to apply with my current numbers, but was wondering if a high Feb LSAT score (170+) would--assuming I was admitted with current numbers--significantly boost my chances for scholarship money.

Do you have to apply this year?

We are nearly numbers twins and I am in a similar situation as you (although I did retake in Dec but am not feeling entirely too confident). I would say go for it if you are 1) ok with the time commitment to continue studying until Feb 2) confident that you can score better. If you are like me and pretty much are dead set on applying this cycle, then I say there's not much to lose granted the conditions mentioned above (except for T14, I doubt many schools would care about a cancel if you feel you did worse). However, as it will be fairly late in the game, I am unsure as to the effect it would have an waitlists/money (but I'm sure a 170+ would warrant some sort of attention). If you have the ability+dedication to devote the time, then I say go for it. GL!

Yes what I was planning on doing was applying with my current numbers and seeing if I get into a school that I chose. If not, then I will plan on applying again next cycle.
