December retake

Post by tomcox10 » Mon Nov 15, 2010 8:34 pm

I just want to ask some of your advice on whether I should retake in December.

I took it in June and scored a 167. I have a 3.85 LSAC GPA. I took about 8 practice tests before the LSAT in June and my worst section was Logic games where I didn't finish 5 or 6 questions.

I just sat down and took a cold diagnostic, rigidly timed. I got a 162. Can I bump that up to a 170 in 4 weeks? I have all of next week off and can put at least 20 hours of studying in that week alone.

I disagree. Unless you're consistently scoring above the 167 I would not retake.

i would say keep the score.

right now you are at a 162. You have approximately 4 weeks to raise it 8 points. The real question is, how was your june result compared to your prep tests for June? If you scored within the high end of your prep tests, then dont. If you scored below your prep test average, then you should have taken it again in october. The risk of scoring lower on this test, and having to explain the differences in scores/ and its negative impact on your cycle is too great. Plus, if you wait until december, you will be further behind than if you apply right now ( assuming your goal is to start in fall 2011. )

If you only took 8 PTs before June I think you have a lot of room for improvement. I'm retaking a 167 and I got that after 20+ PTs, so it sounds like you're in a better place than I am. It takes a while to get back where you were, but if you know you can do better than its definitely worth it.

Retake. You probably won't score lower if you really didn't study that hard the first time. Even if you do score lower, as long as you don't bomb, it won't change the range of schools you are applying to. You are looking at thousands of dollars at a lot of great schools for a few more points. If you get that score up more than a few points, you might have a good chance at H.

EDIT: I went from 161 to 180, not because of luck. I am now going to law school debt free.

Sorry to bump but here is an update.

Practice test 2: 162 (bad day)
Practice test 3: 171
Practice test 4: 169

They were all rigidly timed with me not finishing a few questions. What do you think now?

Go for it. The only schools that are going to care if you take it more than once are HYS and NYU, none of which you have a chance with at 167 anyway.
