Entertainment while we wait for friday....

I'm done with my PS now, but toward the beginning of the process I had writers block. My father had a full ride to a top-5 school in the early eighties. He’s the quintessential big-law type…definitely a lawyer’s lawyer who takes himself very seriously. I asked him what his personal statement was about and I was completely floored by his response. He told me that he handwrote—not typed, but handwrote—his personal statement. Not only was it handwritten, but it was handwritten in florid calligraphy. And not only was it handwritten in calligraphy, but the ink varied in color, sentence by sentence…“in order to convey true emotion.”
I thought that this was pretty outrageous, until he told me what the subject matter was: the trials and tribulations of being an “existential mystic" in small town America.
I will never get a full ride to a T-5, much less be that awesome/ridiculous while doing it.

Actually, that was a pretty awesome story. I keep trying to be cute with my PS but every idea I get, someone else has already done. That and the DoA at Loyola (not a school I'm applying to anyway) says even a spectacular PS won't make a huge difference compared to a very solid one, but things may have been different back in the day.

These two resources helped me nail down my topic. (1) The chapter on personal statements in Anna Ivey's new e-book
http://www.annaivey.com/books and (2) this dude's website:

Hope that helps.

I'd say so. I keep trying to imagine an admissions officer opening up that letter and thinking,
my god, we need this guy
