Intro to Logic

Would taking an intro to logic class help out at all for the LSAT? I have some extra hours to spend on electives and I plan on taking the LSAT in June, so if I took intro to logic this spring will it have an impact?

Yes, at least it did for me, although I started studying a couple years after I took formal logic. Just understanding argument structure and picking out premises and conclusions quickly is bound to help at least organizationally. I'd recommend it.

You should take the class, not because it will help with the LSAT, but just because it sounds interesting.

The intro to logic class I took a long time ago spent very little time on informal logic, which is generally what most of the lsat is.

Most of the time was spent on formal logic, translating sentences into symbolic sentences, making deductions from those symbols, etc.

Would help with the formal logic questions but doesn't really help as much as you might think.

But there is no downside...and for someone that is going to be sitting for the LSAT you are probably already in the right mind frame to get an easy A in that kind of a class.

Took one in college. First 2 weeks = helpful. the rest = not really. I'd say, take a good prep course or read the LRB. There isn't that much or that complicated logic on the LSAT for you to take a class.

Its fun, take it.

The onl problem is that it is potentially hard, and if you are simultaneously studying for the lsat, the last thingyou want on you mind is some venn diagrams.

Still, both logical fallacies and formal logic will help you on the lsat. And again, it is fun.

Agree, fun, worth taking.

It CAN be helpful on many LR questions, but only if you're really good. Most people don't "get" quantificational logic enough to apply it to LR questions.

Honestly, "quantificational" logic is how I get through most LRs. Bottom line, if you think you'll suck at it, don't take it until you have adequate time to spend on it. But, in the end, I'd say it's very worth it, provided you learn the material.

Yeah, if I take the class it would not be my end all to prepping for the LSAT, I also play on taking a KAPLAN course offered on campus. I would be taking it because I have extra elective hours to fill so might as well try to get all the edge I can.

I'm just happy that we don't proofs by induction on the LSAT.

I think my Intro to Logic class really helped with my LSAT. I didn't take it for that purpose, but I feel like it helped me learn to solve things on my feet pretty well.
