PT 31, Game 4

Post by niederbomb » Thu Sep 30, 2010 9:52 am

This game totally kicked my butt. Even with the mulch game, I got it eventually. But this one is different.

What type of game is this and how do you even diagram it?

This one is actually a breeze when you set it up correctly. The format I used isn't something that I've seen advocated anywhere else, and I'm positive that there is a simpler more easily understood way to do it, but here goes.

Instead of your typical linear modeling I setup a diagram with something similar to an excel chart. I'll try to diagram it below as best I can.

G - T | |
H - S/P | |
I - F/P | |
K - F/S | |
L - W/T | |
M - S | |
O - W/P | |
1 2 3

Using this kind of diagram you can see both who is doing what, as well as what day each task is being performed without having to have notes off to the side. For instance, if you knew that W, P and T had to occur on the same day, you would instantly know who had to do what based on the info to the left.

I know this is a horrible diagram, but hopefully it helps a bit. Send me a PM if no one can explain it better after me, although I'm sure someone can.

Wow, my formatting just got all jacked up.
If noone answers and is able to help, send me a PM and I'm find a way to get the answer to you

Yeah this whole LG section was TOUGH. I ran out of time during this game.

Powerscore LGB has it set up as: (vertically)

Since you know its a max of 5 people and a max of 3 days, they see which days each of the tasks can be completed. You can see the min/max # of days taken to complete the whole list of tasks by doing this too.

Task - Days it can be performed
F - 1
W - 1, 2 (can't be on 3 because then it would put T on same day as P)
T - 1, 2 (can't be on 3 because then it would be on same day as P)
S - 1, 2, 3
P - 2, 3 (can't be on same day as taping)

T1 --> P2/P3 (if taping on 1, P on 2 or 3)
T2 --> P3

Task - DAY - who can do it
F - 1 - I/K
W - 1, 2 - L/O
T - 1, 2 - G/L
S - 1, 2, 3 - H/K/M
P - 2, 3 - H/I/M

One key thing you end up seeing is that G or L needs to be there to do T.
(this answers #21 because A is missing G and L)

#22. You see that If it takes 3 days and sanding is on 3
you have 2 options

1 2 3
F T S
W - P

Or F1, W2, T2 , S3, P3.

Looking at
W - 1, 2 - L/O
T - 1, 2 - G/L
I would look for an answer of who could work on day 2 to include L/O/G
Answer E - L and O

#23. I immediately eliminate answer A since it has G and G can't perform more than 1 task.
day 1
F - k
W - L

day 2
T - L
S - K

day 3
P - I

Proves D correct K and L on days 1 and 2 performing 2 tasks each.

I still do not get how you figure out the day possibilities. I don't see that in the rules or anywhere. Do you just try out templates until you discover this through trial and error? Seems like that would take waaay too long.

I thought I was clever for getting through dino and mulch in under 10 minutes, but I've been at this one for over 1 hour and still don't get it.

I looked at the LG Bible, and it doesn't cover this game. It has it listed but not as one that is covered in a chapter. How does the later version recommend diagramming this?

I realized the set up was Testmasters not Powerscore.

Either way I'll try to see if I can make more sense.

You figure out which days the tasks can go on WITHOUT considering "1 person can only do 1 task per day" thing ( I don't have this game in front of me anymore but I think that was a rule)

So you simply look at which days things can go on based on the T--> -P rule.
F must go on day 1 .. you can't just have an empty day

W - 1, 2 (can't be on 3 because then it would put T on same day as P)
T - 1, 2 (can't be on 3 because then it would be on same day as P)
P - 2, 3 (can't be on same day as taping)

S - 1, 2, 3 : This one i just did 4 hypos for.

Hypo1:
1 - 2
F - P
W
T
S

Hypo 2:
1 - 2 - 3
F - S - P
W
T

Hypo 2b:
1 - 2 - 3
F - T - P
W - S

Hypo 3:
1 - 2 - 3
F - T - S
W ------ P

3b:
1 - 2 - 3
F - W - S
----- T - P

Damn, I must be tired....

I just read the Kaplan explanation, and it made me realize the order of the tasks is given in the question.

That helps a lot.... :D

Thanks for the diagram though. Any other games this type of diagram could be useful for?
