I missed the same question and was also frustrated with it. I think the actual inference does not include a gap in benefits, but a qualitative difference in benefits. The short-term relief could be a product of multiple distinct types of benefits, not a common feature of therapy. E.g., therapies 1-3 produces main benefits A, B, C. Benefits A, B, and C all produce short-term relief. No common feature would then be necessary to explain short-term relief resulting from all three.

D is wrong because the therapies could differ dramatically but still have some common element; D does not actually eliminate any possible similarities. E.g., the mere presence of a shrink could hypothetically cause the short-term relief, regardless of the dramatically different therapies employed.
