PT47 S3 Q19-need help with word "contributes"

Hi. I narrowed down the answer to this question to (A) and (C) but eventually eliminated (C) because I thought "contributes" was implying some sort of causation. Does contribute mean correlation (not causation) at best? or is it implied in the passage the high cholesterol causes heart disease? Thanks.
