Can anyone provide any insight to this game? It has been causing me fits.

Which questions in the game exactly? Theres not much you can find out just from the diagram except the things the game directly tells you.

One thing to remember is that although each painting must be touching another painting of a similar type, it is only above/below or next to....that is, paintings that are diagonal to each other don't count as touching.
