Retake in September or October?

I took the Sept 2009 LSAT and got a 170. I was scoring 173-175 on my practice tests, but I didn't take all that many, to be honest. I took the 3 in the LSAT Superprep book and a few of the 10 actual LSATs (all of the logic games). I got a 165 on the diagnostic LSAT on the LSAC site without any prep.

For these reasons, I believe with significant study, I have a decent shot at scoring a 175 or above on a retake. If I concentrate on Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension (two sections I skimped studying on), and take more recent prep tests, I think I can improve my score.

I just don't know if taking the LSAT in October will hinder my chances of admission for fall 2011, since I hear the earlier the better for applications.

You could still apply and send in your score when you get it.

If i indicate that i will be retaking the LSAT in October, will the admissions committee hold off on evaluating my application until my scores are in?

Depends. If you apply early, maybe or maybe not. It is very possible that they can reject/accept you based on the sole score you have submitted.

Even if you wait for your Sept/Oct score, you'll still beat something like 90% of the applicants for any given school. The key is to make sure that you don't wait even for a second to submit your apps once you have your new score. I recommend even filling out the applications through LSAC right now, then sitting on them. Get everything else done right now (letters or rec., transcripts, etc.). If you submit to schools officially on, say, Oct. 26th, then you'll still have the advantage of an early app. Given that your score cannot go up that much, you should already have a list of target schools, etc.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I think I will go with the October exam to give myself more time.
