LGB Question on page 153

Hi,
So I have already read the LGB and I made photo copies of all of the games.
This question is in reference to Game #2 October 1993.
At first, I didnt quite understand the explanation for Question number 18.
I have come across this game while re-doing them and missed #18 but when I look at the explanation, all it says is:
"While the four previous questions can be answered without an understanding of the three patterns that control the game, this generally difficult question is made easy by applying the patterns" and then they go on to show a way to diagram the game.
My questions are: What pattern are they referring to? I can see two ways in which this local question can be diagrammed. The first diagram makes the answer D correct, and the second diagram makes A-C correct. Obviously the first diagram with only one answer is the correct diagram to use, but is there a better explanation for this?
Thank you.
