Only 2% get a 170+ on the LSAT

Damn, I assumed it was a higher percentage being that a lot of the posters on here get a 170+. This is discouraging for real.

Why is this discouraging? Just study until you can do it. Usually ten questions wrong for a 170, completely doable.

You have to consider that there are thousands of people who take the test without really studying. This is a test of skill more than a test of knowledge. It takes even very smart people several months of study to get it right. So don't despair. It is very learnable and a 170+ is a possibility.

So your qualm is basically that only the top 2 % can be in the top 2 %? No wonder you're going to law school.

Come on, everyone knows that everyone is in the top 2%. If you want to be anything more than a janitor with a law degree, you need to make sure you're in the top 0.000001%.

Personally, I was hoping for the top 2% and me.

This may be shocking to some, but a lot of people on here lie about their LSAT score too to sound smarter.

...I don't get the point you are making?
The point I was making is that it seems like a higher percentage (than 2%) get a 170+ because a lot of people lie about their LSAT score. Also the self-selection of TLSers.

my point is that I believe the majority of TLSers who claim to score 170+ are telling the truth.

Maybe, but I don't think it matters at all. Some people are telling the truth and I have gotten some excellent advice from people on how they study, how much, what distractions, what focus etc... It is great to read about people working really hard and really smart and doing well. Someone just posting that they got 175 on a cold diagnostic doesn't really affect me. I didn't score that so I don't think that persons experience really matters to me (except it's a cool story-I mean, I'm sure it happens)
I believe that the majority of the people here tell the truth.

There was a survey last month. 100% verified that they were telling the truth.

I remember that. I lied on that one. Sorry.

This is nice to remember for some perspective. We all tend to judge ourselves by our own tough standards, and it's easy to forget that almost everyone here is doing pretty damn well on this test (or, at least, working hard to get better).

TO RAISE OP'S SPIRITSEZ!!!!
OP, read Pithypike's guide. Don't need to follow line-by line, but I advise getting Powerscore for Logical Reasoning & Logic Games. Get every single practice test. Do your first handful of games with a timer but don't stop when you run out of time. Make 2 extra copies of every game. Review every wrong question. If a particular section is destroying you, there are threads here on methods of improvement. If not, I suggest slowly building your speed up with the clock, and noting how long you took on every section. If you still haven't gotten within time limits by PT 20-ish, ya might wanna start cutting yourself off at time, just to shock yourself so the threat becomes more real. Work in your old games as a fifth section and if you have time, a sixth section.
Stay focused, be positive, and check lawschoolnumbers every time you get a bad score so you can say to yourself "Phew, even with X score I can prolly get into X school". Always stay in the mindset that there is room for improvement, and kick caffeine/anything else months beforehand. Ideally by around PT20-30, you don't want to feel "energized": you want to feel calm & cozy, reading at a comfortable clip where you never stop to reread a paragraph 'cause you zoned out.
Just some suggestions. Develop your own particulars, but take all the tests. Even if you start destroying the LSAT at PT 15, never underestimate the power of overlearning an activity: It'll decrease stress on test day and decrease the likelihood that distractions will throw you off.
It doesn't matter if you miss the 170 mark. You'll do your best, and that'll be damn good. Most people don't put that much work into it, and it's an incredibly learn-able test.

170 isn't actually defined at top 2%. If people studied more, more would get 170.

Some people have suggested that it's basically impossible not to get 170 if you study very hard and efficiently. It's not. There's tens of thousands of people out there that just don't have the capacity to perform well on this test, diagnose issues and possibilities with logic, and comprehend information under timed circumstances. It's just not in their ability. I think a lot of TLSers forget about the 130's/140's/low 150's folks when they make statements on how to prepare for the exam, and assume that if the methods worked for them and for others, they will work for everyone... and that if other methods didn't suit their needs (like prep courses, etc.) that they won't suit others. And it's not like there's anybody here to point those things out because everyone here is usually a top performer.

The really discouraging thing about TLS is the knowledge that so many people go out and raise their score significantly with months of hard work and therefore devalue the amazing scores that us natural test-takers get with very little effort.
