Dilemma- to take the lsat now or not

My son is booked to take the lsat tommorrow. He has doubts because the practice tests he took were not consistent. He would like to apply to T14 schools. If he takes it in October, how late will he be in the regular admissions cycle? Or how does retaking affect the decision?

Earlier is always better, but taking the October test and submitting immediately upon receipt of the score is still considered fairly early.

Define inconsistent? How many tests did he take?

I'm not exaclty sure how many he took. During the past 10 days or so he took I think 4. (He has been studying on and off for the last months and took practice tests too)The scary factor is that he scored 165 yestreday. It really depended on how tired he was and he thinks maybe with more practice he can get consistent. He came home from college in the end of May and has been improving a lot but more time would be helpful. At the same time its tempting to go ahead. The advantage would be to be early in the cycle, not having to study over the summer, etc.

I took over 35 practice tests before taking the real thing. You can't be "inconsistent" with only four--That's when you're still figuring out just what the LSAT is.

I think it always depends on how tired you are, etc. You just need to buckle down and do it because it is the single most important determining factor in your application package. If he's not ready to take it tomorrow, he should wait until October. If he's ready and just nervous, then he's a normal kid and should take it.
