Heidegger's Being and Time. If you can maneuver (I HATE that word, sorry) your way through his convoluted nazi ranting, you'll be just fine.

For philosophy, don't commit to only a few authors. And, TRUST ME, aim for contemporary stuff. That will help you the most. I would get an anthology on metaethics. Most, if not all, should be contemporary.
I think I read a few people suggest Nietzsche. Especially avoid him. He's cool, but not what you are looking for. He writes poetically. He's continental. Avoid anyone continental.
