I chose B instead of C. My reasoning is that since they started to get depression in middle age, they should suffer the most in the first few years when they start to get depression. Also, I cannot figure out how B contributes to more fear of dying. Because they feel more stressed and more responsibility?

Choice C says that many people first become depressed in middle age. This statement doesn't rule out the possibility that most people first become depressed when they are elderly.

"Many" just isn't good enough for this problem.
