Top Law Schools

I'm new to the forum and here is my story...

I am 30 and have a MBA. I am taking the June '10 LSAT. I am unemployed (was laid off) and figure that this is the perfect time for me to pursue law school. I wanted to go to LS a number of years ago, but was sidetracked with a business career. I have minus 12 weeks till the June LSAT and I'm trying to get in for this coming fall (I have 4 schools in mind that take rolling admissions).

My GPA is 3.0 by the way. The top students at these schools typically score 158 or 159 on the LSAT--the bottom 25% score around 152-153. Do you think I will need around a 165 or higher to grab a seat this late in the game?

Also, do you think I still have enough adequate time left to prepare for the 6/7/10 LSAT?

What schools are you thinking of applying to? The vast majority of schools won't take students for Fall 2010 with a June 2010 score. A huge number of schools won't even take a February 2010 score. Are you sure they're ok with a June score? It's true that with rolling admissions the longer you wait the more they rely on just the numbers, but that might not be true of the schools you're applying to.

And yes, there is definitely still time to prepare for the LSAT, especially if you're now unemployed.

160+ is manageable assuming you are starting rather high. You're out this cycle, you won't be attending law school in the fall 2010 if you're applying after the june LSAT. The earliest would could get in would be January.. And most law schools don't let 1L's start in jan.

I think there are a couple law schools that will take a June score for Fall admissions (like Cooley, which is, technically, a law school), but if you study for the LSAT and get a great score, you can be going places a lot better. I understand you wanting to go this Fall since you're unemployed, but if you go to a better school it can make a huge difference in job prospects. Just food for thought.

Yes they are okay with that (taking the June LSAT) and I've talked to them about it.

Cooley is actually the 12th best law school in the country. Clearly better than Stanford.

Steve Jones from Florida Coastal took away my scholarship offer.

Isn't Florida Coastal Law School the Thomas M. Cooley of Florida? I've read that they also have a horrible reputation.

In my area (San Francisco), the only law schools that accept June for same-year admits are not ABA accredited. (Then again, they also a median LSAT in the high 140's, not mid 150's, so who knows.) Just make sure you know what you're getting into.

You have enough time. Typical time spent studying is 2-4 months, and if you're unemployed and can devote most of your life between now and the test to this, you're okay. Scoring above their 75th percentiles will help your chances this late in the game, though, again, as has been said above, you might consider some more selective schools if you can manage their 75th percentile without difficulty.

But then, you've given no initial diagnostic score, so you might start in the 130's and find yourself struggling to pull a 150, much less a 160, so it's hard to say.

I don't live in California and nor do I want to go to school there. The schools I have selected have rolling admissions and accept the June score--I have called and spoke with them about this.

By the way, I am not an idiot--I wouldn't want anything to do with a non-ABA school. Heck, I want nothing to do with Cooley and they are ABA approved (even though its hard to believe sometimes).
