Blue suit...what color shoes?

Well, I have to say I never thought I would pose a fashion question on TLS, but here goes. I just bought a navy blue skirt suit and can't for the life of me find the same color shoes. What color do you think is appropriate for shoes to match a navy suit? Black? Burgundy? Gray?

Probably brown or burgundy.

For me, I've read that you can wear black shoes with a navy suit, but I don't think I ever would. Seems kind of difficult to pull off for some reason.

I agree with black looking kind of off...but brown looks kind of strange too, maybe I just need to find a different shade.

I don't know if this is just for men's fashion (as I'm a dude) but with my navy suit I usually wear burgundy shoes. I have worn black with them as well, but I think the burgundy looks nicer and goes better.

From a man's point of view, I think burgundy is probably the best bet. I love that shade, for example, with dark jeans. I know that's a little different than a dress suit (men's or women's), but the color scheme is obviously similar.

This is a menswear rule. Women can wear navy shoes.

Burgundy should work for men & women.

I wear would wear black, especially if you're carrying a black bag. I think even if you found a good color match in blue shoes it would look too matchy-matchy.

So you think burgundy would be ok for women and not just men?

Dark brown with Navy.

Black with Black.

Almost any other colors are interchangable.

That's according to my business etiquette teacher. And that's also for men. I would assume that would cross over genders though.

black & navy are perfectly fine together. it used to be somewhat of a fashion no-no but it's not the case anymore. i also think a nice deep gray would look nice.

Navy shoes should be really easy to find this time of year, a lot of them will be on sale, too. Maybe check out another store with a good variety of shoes? I have 3 pair of navy heels at home, so they definitely can be found. Even if your suit is a very dark or very light shade of navy for some reason, I still think that a slightly varied shade of navy shoe would look better than any other color.

Burgundy or dark brown. What about heel height? Around the courthouse in Baltimore I have seen women ("lady-lawyers") in ultra-severe suits, contrasting with absolutely provocative and impractical 4-inch open-toe "do-me" shoes. They must be sending messages to someone, but I can't imagine what the code is. Much better, I think, to find a lower heel, sensible style, NOT pointy-toe, NOT slingback or open toe. My opinion, make sure your shoes do not distract you or anyone else from what you are saying and hearing. Consider what you might have to walk through in the parking lot or on the way from the subway. I would like to see you post a photo of your suit and of the shoe that you finally choose. :)

Tan or Nude would probably look best, better in warmer weather climates but can be pulled off pretty much anywhere. Black is fine with navy, but don't go brown.

It has been awhile since I have needed to wear a suit. I thought the rule was "your shoes should match your belt".

Outdated? Silly?

Yellow or Red Shoes. But only for men. And they should be the spice girl-esque platforms if possible. Apparently taller people have a greater advantage in job interviews.

As the resident TLS Fashion Merchandising Major, I feel compelled to join this thread. Black and navy as a pairing have gained in popularity, but the OP really needs to consider the color of her bag. I would recommend a grey or black satchel with elegant hardware, and pumps with a 3" heel to coordinate with the bag. One small piece of personal jewelry that doesn't scream for attention is also recommended, though I hope you will buck the trend and not wear pearls.

Burgundy shoes are really not recommended for business formal. Nude shoes I like, as they elongate the leg, but they might be harder to coordinate with a suit.

Black is ok as long as its incorporated somewhere else too (tie/breifcase)

But remember for the future..black and brown make a frown. Its a no-go.
